Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid (Muriatic Acid), a colorless solution produced by adding hydrogen chloride to water, is a highly corrosive mineral acid used as a reagent, meaning it is added to other solutions to bring about a chemical reaction. Hydrochloric acid occurs naturally in gastric acid and has many industrial uses and applications. Though unknown to many during this time, hydrochloric acid was first used by chemists during the Renaissance era to conduct scientific experiments and research. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, hydrochloric acid was used in the production of vinyl chloride for PVC plastic and MDI/TDI for polyurethane. Hydrochloric acid is now also used in the production of fertilizers and dyes.

In addition, hydrochloric acid has many small-scale applications including household cleaning, gelatin production, food additives, photography, and leather processing. This chemical is often used as a stain remover (for toilet bowls, concrete, etc.) and to balance the pH level of swimming pools. However, the most common use for this chemical is rust removal. Hydrochloric acid etches away at materials like metal, removing the rust from its surface.

Often referred to as muriatic acid, hydrochloric acid has many uses in both industrial and residential applications.
