Tech-grade chemicals (industrial ingredients) are used for many commercial and industrial uses, as they may contain impurities. A ingredient is classified as an industrial ingredient if at least one of its uses is for industrial purposes. Tech-grade ingredients also have many common household uses such as cleaning, preserving, disinfecting, or even building maintenance.

For example – the ingredient, 99% isopropyl alcohol, is used to clean surfaces and also to prevent infection from minor surface wounds such as scrapes and cuts. This tech-grade ingredient is also found in many household products such as paint thinners, inks, general-purpose cleaners, and disinfectants. The chemical, D-limonene, can be used to remove self-adhesive postage stamps from envelope paper and Salt (Sodium Chloride) is added to most foods as a preservative or flavor enhancer.
